Neither one is better in the abstract, and a page that ranks them for you is guessing about an archive it has never seen. What decides it is four things about your own operation: who keeps the metadata alive, what your search has to reach inside the footage, where the files are allowed to live, and what breaks when the library is four times the size it is now. Answer those honestly and the shortlist usually collapses to one obvious pick, sometimes to neither.
The comparison you need is about weekly labour, not features
A feature grid tells you what a system can do. What determines whether you are still happy in a year is what the system needs from you every week. Media asset tools are unusual that way. Most of them can do far more than any team ever configures, and the gap between the demo and the daily reality gets filled by human upkeep that nobody put in the budget. When an organisation posts a job for a content operations coordinator whose day is keeping a media library and a project tracker moving in sync, part of that job exists because the software assumed a person would be there.
So run the comparison on the labour.
Who keeps the metadata alive
Ask each vendor a blunt question: what happens to search quality if nobody touches this system for six months? A setup built on a controlled vocabulary gets better as long as someone maintains it and quietly rots when that person changes teams. A setup built on automatic tagging avoids the rot, but you get whatever vocabulary the model produces, which often does not include the names your team uses for your own products.
There is a third shape, where each file is indexed once when it lands and the search runs against the content itself, so there is no vocabulary to maintain at all. Now check what each system can actually match against. Some search only the fields a human typed. Some search the transcript. Some search descriptions of the picture. The distance between those three is much larger than the distance between any two vendors, and it is the thing that quietly decides whether people go back to scrolling through folders. Where the footage is allowed to live
This axis is usually decided by facts you do not control: an edit suite on site, a security policy, an internet connection that cannot carry your dailies, a freelance colourist in another country. Ask what happens when the network drops in the middle of an ingest, and what a remote editor sees. Deployment shape is the axis where a wrong answer costs the most, because it is the hardest one to reverse later. What a video MAM takes responsibility for varies a lot on this exact point.
What breaks at the size you will be next year
Every asset system feels fine on the first thousand files. Ask what specifically degrades: search response, proxy storage, the permissions model when three departments share a library, the day-one experience for a new hire who does not know your folder conventions. A vendor who cannot name the failure mode has probably not seen it, which tells you something about the size of their largest customer.
When you do not need either of these
If your working archive is one shared drive and two editors who both know where things are, an asset manager adds a login and a nightly sync and gives back very little. The same is true if your problem is that you cannot find the final approved cut among nine exports. That is a naming and handoff problem, and buying a system to solve it usually just moves the nine exports somewhere more expensive.
How to decide
Score both against the four axes above using your own archive, not a sample library. If they come out close on all four, the difference between them is not going to be what you remember in two years; the upkeep habit your team builds around whichever one you pick will be. If one of them loses badly on the deployment axis, stop there, because that is the axis you cannot renegotiate after the contract.

Can we run a media asset manager without a full-time librarian?
Yes, but only if you choose one whose search quality does not depend on someone maintaining a taxonomy. Ask the vendor directly what the system can find when zero metadata has been entered by hand. If the honest answer is filename and date, then the librarian is not optional, they are just unbudgeted, and search will degrade the first quarter nobody has time for it.
What should we actually test during a trial?
Load your own material, not the vendor's sample library, and bring the last ten real requests your team received. Type them in the words the requester used. Then check two more things: how long it takes a person who has never seen the system to find one specific clip, and what happens to new files that arrive during the trial without anyone touching them.
Do we still need a media asset manager if everything is already in cloud storage?
It depends on whether your problem is storage or retrieval. Cloud storage solves where files live, who can open them, and what happens when a laptop dies. It does not solve finding the shot where someone explains the returns policy. If the second sentence describes your week and the first one does not, an asset manager may be the wrong purchase and a search layer may be the right one.
