There is no single best one, and a ranked list is the wrong shape of answer for this question. Live streaming software splits into a few families that solve different problems, and the choice comes down to four things: where the encoding happens, how many people are on camera, how many destinations the stream goes to, and what you want the recording to be worth afterwards. Where the encoding happens

Ask specifically how guests join, whether their audio and video get recorded as separate local tracks, and what happens on screen when one of them drops out mid-sentence.

Sending one stream to one platform is a solved problem. What the recording is for
This is the question that gets decided by default and then regretted. Some setups give you a full-quality local file, some give you a cloud recording at the streamed bitrate, and some give you nothing unless you remember to press record. A year of streams is a large archive, and whether it is an asset or dead weight depends on the file quality you kept and on whether anyone can find anything in it. When you do not need dedicated software
If you stream from a phone, to one platform, with no overlays and no guests, the platform's own app is the correct choice and any additional software is a hobby. The same is true for a single webcam talking-head stream: most platforms have a built-in studio that does this without an install.
Dedicated software earns its place when you need scenes you can switch between, sources beyond one camera, a local recording at higher quality than the stream, or a guest who is not in the room. If none of those apply, you are shopping for a problem you do not have yet.

Is free live streaming software good enough for professional work?
For a single-machine setup with local encoding, yes, and a lot of professional broadcast work runs on free open-source software. Paid products tend to buy you guest management, cloud encoding, multistreaming, and support you can call at 8pm on a Saturday. The distinction to check is which of those you actually need rather than the price tag.
The one place free tiers commonly cost you something real is recording quality on cloud services. If the free plan records at a lower bitrate or shorter retention than the paid plan, that limit is permanent for every stream you did under it.
Do I need a capture card?
Only if the video source is not already a webcam or a window on your computer. A capture card exists to turn an HDMI output, from a console, a cinema camera, or a second PC, into something your streaming software can read. A webcam, a phone used as a webcam, and screen capture all work without one.
If you are streaming console gameplay, you need either a capture card and a second machine, or the console's own built-in streaming, which is simpler and much less flexible.
How much upload speed does live streaming need?
